Social Security Card

How Do I Get A Social Security Card?

  • Complete the Application
     
  • Fill out Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card), available online or at your local SSA office.
     
  • Gather Required Documents (must be originals or certified copies)
     
  • U.S. citizens: Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and proof of citizenship (e.g., birth certificate or U.S. passport).
     
  • Non-citizens: Proof of identity and immigration status (e.g., work visa, green card).
     
  • Submit Your Application
     
  • Apply in person at your local SSA office, or in some cases, you may mail your application and documents.
     
  • Some states allow online replacement requests through a “my Social Security” account if you meet eligibility requirements.
     
  • Receive Your Card
     
  • The SSA will mail your card to your address, usually within 10–14 business days after processing.
