Why Do I Need a Social Security Card?

Employers use your Social Security number to report your earnings and taxes to the government.

Required when filing federal and, in many cases, state income taxes.

Needed to apply for Social Security benefits, Medicare, or other federal programs.

Complete the Application
Fill out Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card), available online or at your local SSA office.
Gather Required Documents (must be originals or certified copies)
U.S. citizens: Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and proof of citizenship (e.g., birth certificate or U.S. passport).
Non-citizens: Proof of identity and immigration status (e.g., work visa, green card).
Submit Your Application
Apply in person at your local SSA office, or in some cases, you may mail your application and documents.
Some states allow online replacement requests through a “my Social Security” account if you meet eligibility requirements.
Receive Your Card
