Health Benefits

Your Medicare and Medicaid benefits can be difficult to understand. We will explain the key differences between Medicaid and Medicare, including who qualifies, what each program covers, and how their benefits compare.

Medicaid vs. Medicare

Medicare

Who It’s For:

  • Primarily for people 65 and older.

  • Also for some younger people with disabilities or end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Main Benefits:

  • Hospital Coverage (Part A): Inpatient hospital stays, hospice, skilled nursing facility.

  • Medical Coverage (Part B): Doctor visits, outpatient care, lab tests, preventive services.

  • Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D): Helps pay for medications.

  • Optional Advantage Plans (Part C): Combines Part A & B, and often includes dental, vision, and hearing through private plans.

Key Points:

  • Federal program – same benefits across all states.

  • You may pay premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance.

  • Not income-based (eligibility based on age/disability).

Medicaid

Who It’s For:

  • People of any age with low income, including families, children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities.

Main Benefits:

  • Hospital and doctor visits

  • Long-term care (nursing homes, home health)

  • Dental, vision, and hearing services

  • Prescription drugs

  • Transportation to medical appointments

  • Mental health and substance use treatment

Key Points:

  • Joint federal and state program, so benefits and eligibility vary by state.

  • Often no premiums and minimal out-of-pocket costs.

  • Includes many services that Medicare doesn’t cover fully (like long-term care).
