Compassionate Release

Compassionate release is a program that allows eligible incarcerated individuals to be released early from prison due to extraordinary circumstances, such as serious illness, terminal conditions, or other urgent humanitarian reasons.

Grounds for Compassionate Release

  • Serious or terminal illness
     
  • Advanced age with declining health
     
  • Severe disability or incapacitation
     
  • Risk of contracting contagious diseases in prison
     
  • Humanitarian reasons, such as family hardship
     
  • Rehabilitation and low risk of reoffending
     
  • Incarceration beyond what is considered just or necessary due to legal delays or sentencing issues
